Scabiosa 'Beaujolais Bonnets' Seeds...Seed from 'Beaujolais Bonnets' Scabiosa

Type: Perennial
Common Names:
Zone: 5-8
Height: 18"
Spread: 10"
Flower color: Deep Maroon-Burgundy
Bloom time: Summer to Fall
Light: Full Sun to Light Shade
Water: Average
Soil: Average / Rich
Other info: Although these have been listed as a *perennial*, I didn't find them to be so. They will however reseed (seed is winter hardy to zone 5), if dead flowers are not removed to promote flowering. I just took the dead dried flower heads and sprinkled them on the ground around the mother plant, and the next year, although the mother plant had died, babies came up and bloomed.

Germination: Slightly difficult germination. Sow seed 4-6 weeks prior to last spring frost. Sow seed in container on good seed starting mix, covering seed. Moisten. Place container inside sandwich baggie and in refrigerator for 3-5 days. Then alternate temperatures between 68°F night to 85°F day. (A heat mat turned on during the day and turing it off at night works well.) Germination should begin in 7-14 days. Alternately, place container outside in early spring when weather is still very cool, or direct sow to garden location in early spring. Seed will germinate as weather warms.
